Samsung’s first tri-fold phone barely hit shelves before word started leaking about its successor. According to fresh supply-chain reports, the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 is already in development, and the headline change is a body that’s dramatically thinner than the original.
The numbers being floated put the folded thickness at around 8.9mm a serious cut from the first-gen TriFold, which was notably chunky even by foldable standards. For context, that would put the sequel in the same neighborhood as a folded Galaxy Z Fold, which is a big deal for a phone that folds into three sections rather than two. None of this is confirmed by Samsung, and it’s worth treating early hinge specs with some caution since these numbers tend to shift as devices move through engineering samples toward mass production.
Where the weight loss is coming from
Reports point to a redesigned dual-hinge mechanism that’s reportedly already deep into verification testing, paired with thinner display layers and slimmer battery cells. That’s a similar playbook to what Samsung used to shave bulk off recent Z Fold generations, just applied to a far more complex three-panel mechanism. The unfolded display is expected to land around 10 inches, and leaks suggest Samsung is exploring S Pen support for that canvas something the original TriFold reportedly skipped, and a feature that would matter a lot to anyone hoping to actually use the screen for note-taking rather than just watching it unfold as a party trick.
The rest is still a black box
Chipset, camera hardware, and battery capacity haven’t leaked yet, though the safe bet is Qualcomm’s next flagship Snapdragon at launch, since that’s been Samsung’s pattern with every recent flagship. Pricing is equally unclear, but given the first TriFold launched as Samsung’s most expensive foldable to date, don’t expect a discount on round two.
A mid-2027 launch timing, likely tied to a summer Unpacked event, suggests Samsung wants real breathing room before committing to a second tri-fold generation rather than rushing an annual refresh. If the thinner design holds up through production, it could be the version that convinces skeptics that tri-folds are more than a one-off flex.
