Mark Gurman’s Bloomberg newsletter is out with a new claim that should get iPad mini fans excited: Apple is reportedly prepping a next-gen model with water resistance, something no iPad mini has ever officially had. Gurman’s track record on Apple hardware roadmaps is about as reliable as leaks get, so this one carries real weight even without an official IP rating attached yet.
The mechanism behind it is what makes this interesting rather than just another spec bump. Apple is reportedly building a vibration-based speaker system that produces sound through the device’s chassis instead of traditional speaker grilles. Fewer physical openings means fewer entry points for water, a smart workaround rather than just slapping on extra sealing, and one that echoes how Apple has handled acoustic engineering on other recent devices.
OLED Finally Comes to the Mini
The bigger headline for most buyers will probably be the OLED display, marking the first time Apple’s smallest tablet gets the panel tech already found on iPhone Pro models and the iPad Pro. Richer colors, true blacks, better contrast, and improved power efficiency are the expected gains but OLED panels cost more to produce than LCD, and Gurman expects that cost to show up in the price tag.
Processor-wise, nothing’s locked in, but earlier reporting points to either an A19 Pro or A20 replacing the current A17 Pro, which has powered the iPad mini since its 2024 refresh. Either option would be a meaningful jump for Apple Intelligence performance, an area where the current mini has felt underpowered compared to Apple’s larger tablets.
Gurman’s timeline points to an October 2026 launch, with the device reportedly carrying the internal codename J510 specific enough detail that this doesn’t feel like early-stage speculation.
Nothing here is official. Apple hasn’t confirmed water resistance, an IP rating, OLED, the chip, pricing, or a launch date, and until Apple’s own announcement, treat all of it as Gurman’s sourcing rather than settled fact.
If you’re currently using an iPad mini and haven’t had water-resistance anxiety before, this generation might finally be worth the wait just to budget for a real price increase alongside it, since the OLED plus a chassis redesign rarely comes cheap.
