Samsung has begun rolling out the Galaxy A18 in Europe, with France as the first confirmed market. The phone is live on Samsung’s French store at €279 in a single 4GB+128GB configuration, a notch above what most of the pre-launch leaks had suggested. Availability elsewhere in Europe hasn’t been detailed yet, so for now this counts as a soft, market-by-market rollout rather than a full continental launch.
The Chipset Surprise
The biggest twist here isn’t the price, it’s the processor. Months of leaks including an earlier full-spec leak had repeatedly pointed to MediaTek’s Helio G99 powering the A18. The French retail unit instead ships with Samsung’s own Exynos 1610, a chip that hadn’t shown up in any official Samsung material before this. Whether the Helio G99 still surfaces in other regions remains unconfirmed, so it’s safer to treat the Exynos 1610 as the chip for the European model specifically rather than a global standard.
Display and Design
Design-wise, nothing has changed from what leakers described. The A18 keeps a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED panel at Full HD+ resolution with a 90Hz refresh rate, a waterdrop-style notch, Gorilla Glass 3, and IP64 dust/splash resistance. It’s a familiar look for Samsung’s budget A-series, complete with the relatively thick bezels the lineup is known for.
RAM, Storage, and What Happened to 256GB
The confirmed French configuration sits at 4GB RAM and 128GB storage. Earlier rumors, including a leak pointing to a 256GB variant, haven’t materialized for this launch. France only gets the 128GB option for now, so that higher-capacity model shouldn’t be assumed as standard across the board.
Cameras and Battery
On the back, the A18 carries a 50MP main camera, a 5MP ultrawide, and a 2MP macro sensor, with a 13MP selfie camera up front; video tops out at Full HD 30fps. Battery capacity lands at 5,000mAh with 25W wired charging and no wireless charging, which tracks for this price tier.
Software Is the Real Selling Point
This is where the A18 actually stands out. It launches on Android 17 with One UI 9 already installed, and Samsung is backing it with six generations of OS upgrades and six years of security updates, an unusually generous commitment for an entry-level device, echoing the long-term support push Samsung has been extending to older devices through its ongoing One UI 9 beta rollout. Google’s Gemini and Circle to Search are also onboard, though Samsung’s more advanced Galaxy AI features are absent, so this is basic AI functionality rather than a full Galaxy AI experience.
Connectivity and Colors
The European A18 is 4G-only, with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C, and NFC rounding out the connectivity sheet. It’s available in Black, Gray, and Light Blue in France. A 5G variant is expected at some point, but it’s a separate device from today’s launch and its specs shouldn’t be treated as confirmed yet.
Is €279 Worth It?
That price is the other point of debate. It’s higher than several earlier leaks suggested, and for hardware that’s still fairly modest 4GB of RAM, a single 128GB storage tier, no OIS on the main camera some early European coverage has already flagged it as a tough sell. The counterargument is the software runway: Super AMOLED at 90Hz, IP64 protection, and six years of updates are rare at this price point, even if the RAM and storage feel tight for 2026.
