Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo appears to be arriving with iOS 27.2 rather than later in the year. Creative Strategies analyst Max Weinbach said on X that the feature is working on his iPhone Duo after installing the iOS 27.2 release candidate, MacRumors reported on October 21. When Apple unveiled the phone in September, it only said Pencil support was coming “later this year,” according to 9to5Mac. Apple hasn’t announced the feature’s final details or a release date for iOS 27.2.
| Detail | Status |
|---|---|
| Phone | iPhone Duo |
| Software | iOS 27.2 release candidate (public release pending) |
| Compatible stylus | Apple Pencil (USB-C) |
| Other Pencil models | Reported as not compatible |
| Displays | Inner and outer |
| Reported uses | Drawing, annotating and scrolling in supported apps |
| Public release | Expected around October 26, not confirmed |
Only the USB-C model of Apple Pencil is reported to work, and the reports say no other Pencil models are compatible, so owners of the Apple Pencil Pro or other versions would need to buy the USB-C one for this phone. The pen works on both the inner folding display and the outer display, and supported apps can use it for drawing, annotation and scrolling. The reports don’t say which apps are supported, and they don’t describe which Pencil features work on the Duo. Apple’s own spec page for the USB-C Pencil lists tilt sensitivity but doesn’t list pressure sensitivity, squeeze, barrel roll or haptic feedback, which are the Pencil Pro’s extras, so expect a simpler feature set than on the Pro.
The public timing comes from expectations rather than an announcement. MacRumors says iOS 27.2 should be released to the public next week, and 9to5Mac points to October 26 or thereabouts. The release candidate arrived on October 19, and it could still be followed by another build if Apple finds problems. People who install the RC can try the Pencil now, while everyone else will wait for the public update.
The timing also lines up with the phone’s launch. The iPhone Duo reaches wider availability on October 23, and Apple’s EU energy label recently confirmed its 4,883mAh battery. Everything about the Pencil support so far comes from one analyst’s test on a prerelease build, so the final version could differ.
