Google just refreshed its Gemini lineup, but not with the flagship model everyone’s been waiting for. Instead, the company is doubling down on speed and affordability with three new lightweight models built for real-world, everyday AI use.
Gemini 3.6 Flash is the new general-purpose workhorse, aimed at faster responses and stronger coding performance without flagship-level costs. Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite goes even leaner, built for high-volume tasks like chatbots, summarization, and simple coding help where speed and low cost matter more than raw power.
The standout addition is Gemini 3.5 Flash Cyber, a model purpose-built for detecting vulnerabilities and supporting defensive cybersecurity work. Given the potential for misuse, Google’s rolling it out cautiously through a limited-access program for governments and trusted partners rather than a general release.
This launch signals a shift away from chasing benchmark records. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has pointed to lowering AI operating costs as increasingly critical as more businesses adopt AI at scale.
The flagship Gemini 3.5 Pro remains delayed after reportedly missing internal coding benchmarks, with Google only promising it’s coming “soon.” Meanwhile, work has already begun on Gemini 4, described as the company’s largest pre-training run yet.
