At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, ZTE unveiled something it’s calling a first for the industry: a smartphone built around “Agentic AI” AI designed to actually do things for you, not just chat back.
What Makes This Different From Regular Smartphone AI
Most phone AI right now answers questions, edits photos, or generates text. ZTE’s pitch is a step further an AI agent that understands a goal, breaks it into steps, and carries those steps out with minimal input, provided the user gives it permission first.
Meet AiMOGA
The system running underneath is called AiMOGA, ZTE’s AI platform combining large language models, on-device processing, cloud computing, and multimodal understanding across text, voice, and images. According to ZTE, this is what lets the phone move from being a chatbot to functioning more like a digital assistant that finishes tasks on your behalf.
ZTE says the AI agent can handle things like booking travel, scheduling meetings, summarizing documents, managing settings, and coordinating between multiple apps, essentially cutting down the manual back-and-forth most tasks currently require.
On-Device vs. Cloud
The system splits work between on-device AI for fast, privacy-sensitive requests and cloud AI for heavier reasoning and multi-step planning, aiming to balance speed with computing power.
A Crowded Field
Apple has Apple Intelligence, Samsung has Galaxy AI, Google has Gemini, and both Honor and Xiaomi have their own AI agents in development. ZTE’s “world’s first” claim is really a marketing distinction rather than something independently verified across the industry; plenty of competitors are working toward similar territory.
Notably absent from the announcement: hardware specs, pricing, and a release date. ZTE’s focus here was entirely on the AI vision rather than the device itself.
