So the iPhone 17 and the iPhone Air have been out for a few months now, and honestly, people are still going back and forth on which one makes more sense. Both are solid phones. Both feel premium. The interesting thing is that because the air is so thin and uses titanium, you tend to feel the warmth a little more on the surface when it heats up. The 17 is slightly thicker and aluminum, which seems to spread and dissipate that heat a little better. Neither phone gets to a level where it is actually uncomfortable, but the Air does make you more aware of the warmth when it happens.
Software Same Experience, Different Screen
Both phones run iOS 26 with Liquid Glass, the same clear icons, the same Apple Intelligence features including Siri improvements and the visual intelligence tools. ChatGPT integration is there on both. Rewrite tools, AI features all the same.
The one thing that stands out using the Air is that you start wanting more from that larger screen. Split screen would make sense. Landscape mode feels natural to want. But iOS does not offer that on either phone and on the 6.5 inch Air you feel the absence more than on the 17.

The Air is for a specific type of person. If you want the lightest phone possible, love a bigger screen, do not mind a single camera, and just want something that feels genuinely different from every other phone in your hand the Air delivers that. It is a statement device that actually works well day to day.
Apple will almost certainly improve the Air significantly on the next version with a second camera and possibly a better battery. But right now, for the money, the iPhone 17 is the one most people should pick up.
