Google has significantly upgraded its Android Switch migration tool in Android 17, built in collaboration with Apple, making it easier than ever to move from an iPhone to an Android device without losing your data.
The migration process is now native to Android 17 no separate app required on supported devices. During setup, eligible phones display a QR code that kicks off a wireless or USB-C transfer straight from an iPhone.
Android 17 dramatically expands what moves over, including eSIM profiles, passwords and passkeys, Wi-Fi credentials, SMS/MMS/RCS and iMessage history with media, contacts, calendar events, photos, files, home screen layout, notes, call history, alarms, and MP3s a much longer list than previous versions supported.
Perhaps the biggest change: new cross-platform APIs let participating developers migrate actual app settings and local data, not just reinstall the app shell, cutting down on manual sign-ins and reconfiguration after switching.
The upgraded tool currently works on Pixel 8 and newer, along with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8, with broader device support expected over time. Users who skip migration during setup can still transfer data later via Settings > Accounts and backup on eligible Pixel 9+ and Samsung foldable devices.
