Apple Maps ads have officially started appearing, and there’s no way to turn them off. Apple confirmed the rollout began in the last few days across the US and Canada, following the original March announcement that promised ads sometime in late summer. Now they’re actually live, showing up in two spots: the Suggested Places section before you search, and near the top of relevant search results after you do.
Apple’s keeping the format restrained, one ad per set of search results, marked with a blue “Ad” badge so it’s distinguishable from a normal listing. This isn’t banner advertising plastered across the map, it’s closer to how Google Maps handles sponsored local search.
Here’s the part causing friction: Apple’s Personalized Ads setting, which exists elsewhere in Apple’s ecosystem, explicitly doesn’t apply to Maps. Apple’s own documentation states it directly, there’s no toggle, no opt-out, nothing. Instead, Apple says it’s using contextual signals, your search terms, the map area you’re viewing, approximate location, rather than building a tracking profile. Apple also says ad interactions aren’t tied to your Apple Account and aren’t shared with third parties, and specifically excludes Apple Pay, Health, and Home app data from ad targeting.
For businesses, Apple’s offering a $150 credit for first-time advertisers, with billing kicking in at either $500 spent or seven days, whichever comes first. Categories like home services, bail bonds, and crypto ATMs are excluded entirely.
The rollout is gradual, so not every US or Canadian user is seeing ads yet, and there’s no timeline for other countries. If Maps’ lack of ads was part of why you preferred it, that’s changing now, and there’s currently no setting that brings the old experience back.
