Mark your calendar: Huawei will officially unveil the Mate XT 2 on September 7, 2026, at a Shenzhen event billed as “HarmonyOS 7 | Huawei Mate XT 2 and All-Scenario New Product Launch,” kicking off at 2:30 p.m. China Standard Time. It’s Huawei’s second tri-fold, following the original Mate XT that launched back in 2024 as the world’s first commercially available phone of its kind. This time, though, Huawei isn’t just iterating it’s reportedly gunning straight for Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold.
That’s the real story here. The first Mate XT used a folding approach quite different from Samsung’s eventual design. Reports now suggest the Mate XT 2 shifts toward a redesigned mechanism that folds into a Z-shaped configuration closer to Samsung’s, rather than sticking with the original’s distinct zigzag layout. Whether Huawei abandons the old mechanism entirely is still unclear, but the direction is unmistakable.

Under the hood, expect a Kirin 9050 Pro chip rather than a Snapdragon platform consistent with Huawei’s continued reliance on in-house silicon amid ongoing U.S. chip restrictions. The bigger engineering story is the hinge: Huawei has reportedly redesigned it for better durability and a noticeably reduced crease, addressing one of the biggest complaints about tri-fold displays, which endure far more mechanical stress than standard book-style foldables. Rumors also point to ultra-thin flexible glass, UWB, and satellite connectivity, though none of that is confirmed yet.
Software-wise, the Mate XT 2 will debut alongside HarmonyOS 7, Huawei’s consumer OS update built around a new Intelligent Agent Framework 2.0 for cross-app AI actions, a feature that could genuinely benefit from a tri-fold’s tablet-sized unfolded canvas.
Samsung, notably, hasn’t announced a Galaxy Z TriFold successor, with reports pointing to 2027 at the earliest. That gap gives Huawei a real window to plant its flag first in the tri-fold race, even if only in China for now.
