Apple’s backend code reportedly contains references pointing to MG, the SAIC-owned automaker, preparing support for Apple Car Key. The discovery surfaced August 21, and if it holds up, MG owners could eventually lock, unlock, and start their vehicles using an iPhone or Apple Watch, including Express Mode for quick access without unlocking the phone first.
Don’t get too far ahead of this one, though. MG hasn’t confirmed anything publicly, the code doesn’t say which specific models would get the feature, and there’s no launch date attached to any of it. A backend reference like this usually means engineering work is underway, not that a rollout is imminent.

What makes this worth watching is the company MG’s now keeping. Apple’s backend has also recently pointed toward Car Key support coming to Mahindra and GWM’s TANK brand, both fairly unexpected names in Apple’s ecosystem. That’s three automakers with real momentum toward Apple Car Key showing up in leaks within a short window, suggesting Apple’s actively expanding compatibility well beyond the usual premium brands it’s worked with so far.
If you drive an MG or you’re shopping for one, this isn’t a reason to wait yet, there’s no timeline here at all. But it’s a good sign Apple Car Key is spreading into more mainstream and budget-friendly automakers rather than staying limited to luxury partners.
