Samsung is reportedly adding 1 million extra units of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 to its production run, and the reason comes down to preorder numbers that caught even Samsung off guard. Reports say the company has already placed the additional component orders with suppliers, pushing total Fold 8 production into the high 3-million range, well above the roughly 2.8 million units originally planned.
The demand behind that decision is genuinely strong. Samsung says the Galaxy Z8 series pulled in 1.44 million preorders between July 28 and August 4, a number that’s 38.5% higher than the 1.08 million the Z7 series generated last year, and higher than the 1.36 million preorders the Galaxy S26 series saw over the entire first half of this year. Roughly 70% of those Z8-series preorders went specifically to the Fold 8, which is why Samsung is directing the extra production there rather than spreading it across the lineup.
Part of what’s driving interest is the Fold 8’s redesign. It’s the first Fold to move to a 4:3 aspect ratio, dropping the taller, narrower shape previous Fold models used, paired with a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch main foldable OLED. Samsung already bumped Fold 7 production after strong demand last year, so Fold 8 marks the second straight generation where preorders have outpaced Samsung’s original plan, a pattern that reports frame as a sign foldables may be shifting from a niche category into steadier mainstream demand.
There’s a timing wrinkle worth flagging too. Reports suggest Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected this September and will reportedly use a similar 4:3 aspect ratio, meaning Samsung’s Wide Fold design is about to get its most direct competition yet, right as demand for it is peaking.
One caveat worth keeping in mind: some of that preorder surge may be tied to Samsung’s double-storage promotion, which offered 512GB models at 256GB pricing, a deal that likely looked even more attractive given this year’s elevated memory-chip prices. That doesn’t erase the demand, but it does mean not every preorder buyer is necessarily locked in at full retail price down the line.
