Apple Reportedly Killed Two “Extreme” Chips to Chase AI Instead

Apple apparently had bigger plans for the Mac Pro than we ever got to see. According to reports, the company worked on not one but two ultra-high-end “Extreme” Apple Silicon chips over the years and quietly canceled both as its priorities shifted toward AI.

The first was the long-rumored M2 Extreme, reportedly scrapped years ago. The second, believed to be an M4 or M5 Extreme, apparently made it further into development before Apple pulled the plug on that too.

These chips were designed to sit above even the Ultra tier, topping out a lineup that would have looked like M5, M5 Pro, M5 Max, M5 Ultra, and finally M5 Extreme. The approach: fuse four Max-class dies into a single monster processor, dramatically scaling up CPU cores, GPU cores, and memory bandwidth beyond anything Apple currently ships.

Based on an M4 Max-class design, estimates point to as many as 64 CPU cores and 160 GPU cores specs aimed squarely at 3D rendering, AI development, and scientific computing on a future Mac Pro. These are informed estimates, not confirmed specs, since Apple never officially acknowledged either project.

Reports point to Apple redirecting engineering resources toward AI-focused silicon instead driven by growing demand for Apple Intelligence, the cost of developing dedicated AI server chips, and a genuinely limited market for a processor this extreme. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman adds another data point: Apple is reportedly skipping the M6 Pro, Max, and Ultra entirely to fast-track the M7 family, which is expected to bring major Neural Engine upgrades.

Without an Extreme chip, the Ultra-class processor remains the ceiling for Apple’s most powerful desktops meaning raw CPU and GPU scaling is taking a back seat to AI acceleration for the foreseeable future.
