OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Health For Personalized Medical Help

ChatGPT Health

ChatGPT Health is a new dedicated health and wellness experience built into ChatGPT, designed to help users understand and manage their health information more effectively by combining personal data with AI-generated responses. It was officially announced and launched by OpenAI on January 7, 2026.

Unlike general ChatGPT interactions, ChatGPT Health provides a separate “Health” space where conversations about health are isolated, encrypted, and compartmentalized to keep sensitive information secure and private.

Why It Was Created

Health and wellness queries are already one of the most common ways people use ChatGPT OpenAI reports that over 230 million health- and wellness-related questions are asked on the platform each week. ChatGPT Health is meant to formalize and improve those interactions in a safer, more personalized environment.

OpenAI built this experience in close collaboration with more than 260 physicians across 60 countries and specialties, ensuring the responses are clear, safe, and clinically informed, though not a substitute for professional medical care.

Key Features

Personalization with Your Data

Users can connect their own health information to ChatGPT Health, including:

  • Medical records (e.g., lab results, visit summaries)
  • Wellness and activity apps like Apple Health (iOS only), MyFitnessPal, Function, Weight Watchers, Peloton, and AllTrails
  • This allows ChatGPT Health to interpret lab findings, track trends, summarize care instructions, help prepare for doctor visits, and offer contextual diet/exercise guidance based on real data.

Security & Privacy Controls

ChatGPT Health is built with layered privacy and security safeguards:

  • Encrypted and isolated from the rest of ChatGPT so health data doesn’t leak into regular chats.
  • Health conversations and connected data are not used to train OpenAI’s foundational models by default.
  • Users retain control to view or delete their health data and disconnect apps anytime.

Relationship to Medical Advice

OpenAI stresses that ChatGPT Health is not intended to diagnose, treat, or replace professional medical advice or care. Instead, it aims to help users make sense of medical information and navigate everyday health decisions more confidently.

Early Access & Availability

  • ChatGPT Health is currently available via waitlist to a small group of early users.
  • Users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside of the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the UK are eligible at launch.
  • OpenAI plans to expand access on web and iOS in the coming weeks, with additional features and app integrations rolling out over time.

What You Can Do With It

ChatGPT Health enables several practical use cases:

  • Explain your latest lab results in plain language
  • Prepare questions for a doctor appointment
  • Get contextual advice on diet and exercise
  • Track trends over time using wearable or wellness app data
  • Explore trade-offs in health insurance options
  • Summarize and organize clinical instructions or visit notes

Medical Collaboration & Evaluation

The Health experience is evaluated not just for technical accuracy, but also through a clinical lens using HealthBench, a physician-informed assessment framework that prioritizes safety, clarity, appropriate escalation of care, and respect for context.
