Xiaomi has officially confirmed the Xiaomi 18 Pro series will launch in China sometime in September 2026, without yet naming an exact date. The headline feature so far is a reworked rear display Xiaomi is calling the “Versatile Back Screen” (百变背屏), positioned as a major step up from the secondary screen introduced on last year’s Xiaomi 17 Pro series.

The rear display stays built into the horizontal Leica camera module, similar to the 17 Pro’s layout, but Xiaomi says it can now do considerably more than show wallpapers, notifications, or a clock. According to the official teaser, users can run small standalone apps directly on the rear screen. An egg-cooking timer, a water-drinking reminder, a Pomodoro focus timer, a vocabulary-learning tool, and recipe recommendations were all shown as working examples. It’s a meaningful shift from a screen with a handful of fixed widgets to something closer to a genuine secondary app surface.
AI-Generated Back-Screen Apps
The more interesting twist is how those apps get made. Xiaomi’s teaser showed the rear display with the Chinese text “生成中” (“Generating”), and the follow-up demonstration confirmed the screen can use AI to generate app cards on the fly based on what the user asks for rather than Xiaomi having to manually build every possible utility in advance. That’s a more concrete AI use case than the initial teaser suggested, though exactly how the generation works under the hood hasn’t been documented in full detail yet.
Why Xiaomi Is Doubling Down on the Rear Screen
Xiaomi executive Lu Weibing said the feature has genuinely stuck with users: more than 4 million daily interactions with rear-screen app cards, and over 3.5 million wallpaper changes added every day on the previous generation. That usage data is presumably why Xiaomi built a more advanced version instead of quietly dropping the feature after one generation something that puts Xiaomi in a different lane from how most phone makers, including Xiaomi’s own recent flagships compared against Apple’s hardware, have typically treated secondary displays as a minor add-on rather than a core selling point.

Visually confirmed so far: Leica branding, a triple rear camera system, and the horizontally arranged camera module with the display integrated into it are all visible in the official teaser. The Xiaomi 18 Pro has turned up on Geekbench carrying an unreleased Qualcomm platform identified as SM8975, which reports connect to the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. The listing showed 16GB of RAM, Android 17, a single-core score of 3,619, and a multi-core score of 11,842 solid numbers, though it’s worth remembering this comes from a benchmark listing and third-party chip identification rather than anything Xiaomi has confirmed directly.
Software: Android 17
The same Geekbench listing points to Android 17 under the hood, with Xiaomi’s next-generation HyperOS expected on top, though Xiaomi hasn’t published the complete software specification yet.
Display, Battery, and Charging (Rumored)
Beyond the officially confirmed rear-screen and camera details, a batch of specs are circulating from earlier leaks rather than Xiaomi’s own materials:
- Display: 2K-class resolution, a custom flat OLED panel, slimmer bezels
- Battery: around 7,000mAh on the Xiaomi 18 Pro, possibly 8,000mAh+ on the Pro Max
