A subset of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T in the US are running into cellular connectivity problems, with complaints turning up across Reddit and the Apple Support Community. Affected users describe a mix of symptoms: cellular calls not going through, missed incoming calls, SMS and cellular data failing, trouble with eSIM activation and provisioning, and the phone sitting on “SOS Only” or bouncing between signal states. Wi-Fi Calling still works for some of the affected users, which points to the cellular radio link specifically rather than the phone as a whole.
It’s worth being precise here: this is a small subset of users, not a blanket problem hitting every iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T.
eSIM provisioning looks like the core issue
The reports lean toward eSIM provisioning as the likely trigger, and AT&T has acknowledged eSIM-related problems with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. For affected customers, the connection can stay parked on SOS Only or flicker in and out even while Wi-Fi Calling keeps working normally. Some users say re-provisioning their eSIM through AT&T has helped, though results have been inconsistent enough that it isn’t a guaranteed fix. Neither AT&T nor Apple has laid out a confirmed technical root cause yet.
Not a confirmed hardware problem
There’s no evidence so far that this traces back to a hardware fault in the iPhone 18 Pro Max itself. All signs currently point to something on the network/eSIM provisioning side. That distinction matters because the US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the odd one out in Apple’s lineup this year: a teardown confirmed it still ships with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 modem, the same one used in the iPhone 17 Pro line, while the smaller iPhone 18 Pro uses Apple’s own C2 modem in the US, and the Pro Max uses C2 everywhere outside the US. So far there’s no solid evidence tying the AT&T problem to the Qualcomm modem specifically.
Where things stand with AT&T and Apple
AT&T has acknowledged the eSIM-related issue on its end. Apple hadn’t publicly acknowledged this particular AT&T problem as of the latest reports, which sets it apart from the separate Face ID freeze-and-reboot bug some iPhone 18 Pro users have hit, where Apple has already confirmed a software fix is coming early next week, likely as part of iOS 27.0.1.
If you’re affected, the practical move right now is working with AT&T support to troubleshoot or re-provision the eSIM. Since the exact cause isn’t publicly confirmed, it’s too early to call any particular workaround a permanent fix if the root issue really is eSIM provisioning, AT&T may need to re-provision or replace the profile on their end.
These two problems, the AT&T/eSIM issue and the Face ID bug, are separate and shouldn’t be lumped together.
