Samsung Adds WeChat Backup and Restore to the W27, and Says It Will Expand With One UI 9.5

Samsung has introduced a WeChat backup and restore feature on the China-only W27, and it says the feature will expand to more eligible devices with One UI 9.5, according to Samsung’s announcement on its China members forum. It is one of the first features Samsung has openly tied to the update, which is still being tested internally, as seen in the new One UI 9.5 test firmware for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung hasn’t published a list of eligible models or said whether the feature will leave China.

The feature is built into the Settings app and works through Baidu, so users need the Baidu Netdisk app and a Baidu account along with WeChat. The options are Create backup, Download backup and Restore backup, and incremental backups are supported, which means new content can be added to an existing backup. Restoring replaces the WeChat data currently on the phone and doesn’t merge the two sets of chats, so it’s worth checking what is on the device before restoring.

The wording matters here. Samsung says the feature will come to other eligible devices with One UI 9.5, which isn’t the same as every phone that gets the update, and it hasn’t explained how eligibility or regions will work. The W27 is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra’s China-market luxury sibling, and since WeChat and Baidu Netdisk are both China-focused, the feature may stay there. There is no sign of international support, and Samsung hasn’t said whether other messaging apps such as WhatsApp would follow.

One UI 9.5 is expected to be based on Android 17 and to debut with the Galaxy S27 series in early 2027, with a beta possibly starting in late November or December. Samsung hasn’t published a schedule or full changelog, and other signs of the update include the second One UI 9.5 test build for the Galaxy A57. Until Samsung names the supported phones, nobody outside China should expect this feature.
