iPhone 17 Set to Break a 15-Year-Old Longevity Record

The iPhone 17 is on track to become Apple’s longest-running standard iPhone ever, and by a wider margin than you might expect. Apple launched the phone in September 2025, and under its reportedly reshuffled release schedule, the standard iPhone 18 isn’t expected until spring 2027. Do the math and that’s about 18 months at the top, roughly 550 days, which would beat the previous record holder by a comfortable stretch rather than a narrow one.

That old record belongs to the iPhone 4, which launched on June 24, 2010 and wasn’t replaced until the iPhone 4S arrived on October 14, 2011, a run of 477 days, or about 15.7 months. If the iPhone 18 timeline holds, the iPhone 17 would beat that by roughly 73 days, around 2.4 months longer. For comparison, the iPhone 11 Pro held on for 399 days thanks to the pandemic pushing the iPhone 12 into a later-than-usual release, and the original iPhone had a 378-day run before the 3G replaced it.

The reason behind this one is different from past cases, though. The iPhone 4 stuck around longer because Apple simply took extra time before shipping the 4S, keeping the same design while upgrading the internals with things like Siri and a faster chip. The iPhone 17’s situation isn’t about a delay. Apple is reportedly splitting its release calendar on purpose, moving the Pro lineup and the standard lineup onto separate tracks rather than pushing everything back together.

Under that plan, September 2026 would bring the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first foldable iPhone, said to be positioned as an Ultra-tier model. The standard iPhone 18 and a new iPhone 18e would then follow in spring 2027. That’s an important distinction for anyone assuming Apple is going quiet for a year and a half: the company would still be shipping new high-end iPhones on the usual September schedule, it’s just the mainstream model that shifts onto its own cycle.

For iPhone 17 buyers, that’s arguably good news. A phone that stays current for a year and a half instead of one gives it a longer resale window and a longer stretch before it starts looking dated next to whatever ships in its category. It also means anyone specifically waiting on the next standard iPhone, rather than a Pro model or the foldable, is looking at a considerably longer wait than usual.

None of this is locked in yet. Apple hasn’t confirmed a spring 2027 date for the standard iPhone 18, and the current numbers are based on supply-chain reporting rather than an official roadmap. But if the timeline holds, the iPhone 17 won’t just be another entry in the lineup, it’ll be the longest-serving standard iPhone Apple has ever sold.
