Apple is reportedly close to finalizing a $1 billion-a-year deal with Google to integrate a custom version of the Gemini AI model into Siri, according to Bloomberg. The upgraded voice assistant is expected to launch next spring as part of Apple’s major AI revamp.
The partnership marks a big shift for Apple, which typically relies on its in-house technology. The custom Gemini model will reportedly have 1.2 trillion parameters, far more than Apple’s current 150 billion-parameter cloud AI system making it nearly eight times more powerful.
Apple had also tested AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic earlier this year before selecting Google’s Gemini. While Apple continues developing its own advanced AI systems, this collaboration is said to be a temporary solution to enhance Siri’s intelligence and responsiveness ahead of future Apple Intelligence updates.
