Apple has announced its first touchscreen Mac laptop, the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display, at its Pro and Tell event on October 28. It’s a major shift for a company that has kept touch on the iPad and the iPhone for years, and it lands on the November 6 date the touchscreen MacBook Pro had been rumored for. The 14-inch and 16-inch models are available to pre-order now.

Display and touch

The PROLED XDR display replaces the mini-LED panel in earlier MacBook Pro models. Apple claims 2,000 nits of peak brightness and a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, with ProMotion adjusting the refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz. Apple’s hinge was reworked so the screen is less prone to wobble when you touch it.

On the software side, Apple’s own apps are set to work with touch out of the box, and the company says many third-party apps will work right away, including Notion, Canva, Zoom, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve and Blender. The keyboard and trackpad stay, so touch is an addition rather than a replacement.

Design changes

These are the first MacBook Pro design changes since the M1 Pro and M1 Max models in 2021. The notch is gone, replaced by a Dynamic Island around the webcam that can show real-time notifications, and the Apple logo on the lid lights up. The 14-inch model weighs about half a pound less than its predecessor and the 16-inch about 0.7 pounds less. Apple says the 14-inch is half a millimeter thinner and the 16-inch nearly a millimeter thinner, credit to OLED’s thinner display stack. The speakers also get new tweeters and Apple promises 50% deeper bass.

Chips and pricing

Both sizes use the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than M6-series silicon. The M6 is limited to the separate 14-inch MacBook Pro announced a day earlier, which keeps the older mini-LED display and doesn’t have touch.
