Telegram vanished from Apple’s App Store worldwide for roughly 40 minutes last night, and the reason was serious: Apple says its review turned up child sexual abuse material on the platform. The app went dark around 9:30 p.m. ET on August 3, with listings returning 404 errors in the US, India, Australia, and Singapore, before reappearing around 10:10 p.m. once Telegram removed the content and banned the account responsible.
Telegram pushed back hard on how the incident was framed, telling reporters, “Apple reported one user sharing CSAM that was immediately banned,” while pointing to its own 2026 safety numbers more than 337,900 CSAM-linked groups and channels removed this year alone, on top of 29,640 takedowns in 2025 following reports from child-safety organizations. The company also needled Apple publicly, asking whether the same enforcement standard would apply to every app in the Store going forward.
That question isn’t hypothetical. Reports on X have documented AI-generated sexualized images of minors circulating on that platform, yet Apple has taken no comparable removal action against it, a contrast that’s drawing real scrutiny over whether App Store enforcement is applied consistently across major platforms or case-by-case.
This isn’t new territory for Telegram, either. Apple pulled the app once before, back in 2018, over similarly serious content concerns, and Telegram has faced mounting regulatory pressure elsewhere this year, including scrutiny in multiple countries over how it moderates illegal content at scale.
For everyday users, last night nothing changed. Anyone with Telegram already installed kept using it without interruption, and the app never left Google Play or the Mac App Store. But the episode is a reminder that Apple, not just governments or Telegram itself, still holds real leverage over which apps a billion-plus iPhone users can actually download.
