Apple Pay Officially Launches in the Philippines

Apple Pay

Apple Pay has quietly gone live in the Philippines, arriving roughly nine months after Google Pay beat it to market on November 18, 2025 a gap that gave Apple’s rival a real head start with local banks and users.

Four banks support Apple Pay at launch: UnionBank, Metrobank, China Bank, and GoTyme Bank, covering eligible Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards. American Express isn’t supported yet, and more banks are expected to join as tokenization rolls out.

The bigger challenge isn’t Google Pay, though it’s GCash, which claims over 81 million active users and dominates everyday Philippine payments through its own ecosystem. GCash has already responded by rolling out its own Visa and Mastercard card-linking feature, a direct answer to Apple Pay’s approaching arrival rather than a coincidence.

As with past launches elsewhere, Apple didn’t make a formal announcement: cardholders simply noticed the option appearing in Wallet before banks confirmed it publicly. For iPhone users tired of pulling out physical cards, that quiet rollout is still a genuine convenience win, even if catching up to GCash’s scale will take considerably longer.
