Apple is bringing back a lottery system for retail employees who want a shot at attending its September iPhone launch, according to Bloomberg. It’s a small gesture, but it says a lot about where Apple’s head is at right now: the fall event is close, and the internal machinery is already spinning up.
According to the reports, Apple Store employees will be able to enter a lottery for a chance to attend the announcement in person at Apple Park. Winners get to watch the iPhone 18 lineup, next-gen Apple Watch models, and updated AirPods get unveiled live rather than through a livestream in the break room. It’s not a new idea Apple has run similar programs in past years but reviving it now is a clear signal that invitations, seating charts, and event logistics are already being locked down internally.
The move also doubles as a morale play. Retail staff are the ones who’ll be fielding customer questions and running demos the moment preorders open, so giving a handful of them a front-row seat is as much recognition as it is theater.
Beyond the lottery, reports say Apple is deep into its usual pre-launch choreography: blocking out employee schedules for launch week, prepping stores for the crowds, and running product training sessions so staff know the new hardware inside and out before it hits shelves.
Apple hasn’t confirmed a date or sent press invites yet, but if recent years are any guide, expect a mid-September event announcement with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Tahoe, and watchOS 27 release dates attached.
The real story here isn’t the lottery itself. It’s the timing this kind of internal prep only ramps up once a launch date is essentially locked, so an official Apple invite is likely just weeks away.
