Apple Says 1.5 Billion Subscriptions Are Active Across Its Services

Apple Subscriptions

Apple just crossed 1.5 billion paid subscriptions, a figure large enough that it roughly maps to nearly one-fifth of the world’s population though that comparison comes with an asterisk, since it counts subscriptions, not unique people, and plenty of customers stack multiple Apple services on the same account.

The number came out during Apple’s fiscal Q3 2026 earnings call, tucked inside a Services division that generated a June-quarter record of roughly $30.7 billion, up 12% year-over-year. That’s real growth, but it actually landed short of Wall Street’s roughly $31.4 billion estimate, missing by around $660 million a reminder that hitting a splashy subscriber milestone and beating analyst forecasts aren’t the same thing.

The growth curve here is the more telling data point. Apple first announced it had crossed 1 billion subscriptions back in 2023, meaning it added another 500 million in roughly three years, a 50% jump that outpaces how Apple’s device sales have grown over the same stretch. Set against Apple’s reported installed base of 2.5 billion active devices, that puts subscription penetration at roughly 60% of everyone actively using an Apple product, a meaningfully higher ratio than most tech companies manage with paid add-ons.

The count spans Apple’s own services Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple Fitness+, News+, iCloud+, and Apple One plus third-party App Store subscriptions where Apple takes a cut of the revenue. Apple didn’t break down how that split falls between its own services and outside apps, so it’s impossible to say how much of the 1.5 billion is Apple-branded loyalty versus just riding on top of other developers’ subscription businesses.

Either way, the takeaway for anyone watching Apple’s next chapter under incoming CEO John Ternus is straightforward: hardware still gets the keynote moments, but recurring subscription revenue is now the business Apple is quietly building its future around.
