Apple Releases iOS 27.0.1 to Fix iPhone 18 Pro Face ID Bug

Apple has released iOS 27.0.1, the first update to iOS 27 since it launched on September 14. The update is a bug-fix release, and its headline change is the fix for the Face ID freeze-and-restart problem that some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max owners have been hitting. You can grab it over the air from Settings → General → Software Update.

The bug showed up when Face ID failed to authenticate, most often inside protected apps. Affected phones would stop responding and then restart on their own. Some users also reported a “Face ID is Not Available” message during setup and trouble with the Require Attention for Face ID setting. Apple confirmed on September 24 that a software fix was coming early this week, and iOS 27.0.1 is that update. The company is treating the problem as a software bug, not a hardware fault, even though the iPhone 18 Pro models use a new under-display infrared camera arrangement for Face ID.

Face ID isn’t the only thing addressed. According to Apple’s release notes, the update includes three specific fixes:

The touchscreen fix addresses an iOS 27 bug, while the camera artifact fix applies to a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units.

Apple also released iPadOS 27.0.1 alongside the iPhone update. Its release notes only mention bug fixes, without listing any of the iPhone 18 Pro issues. It follows a familiar pattern from earlier point releases like iOS 26.2, though this one is a much smaller, fix-only update.
