Apple Drops Plan to Ship Pre-Set-Up Leased iPhones

Apple reportedly looked at shipping replacement iPhones already loaded with a customer’s personal data before scrapping the idea entirely. The concept was tied to Apple Upgrade, Apple’s new leasing program, and was described as a white-glove option: instead of handing customers a factory-fresh iPhone that still needs a full setup and data transfer, Apple would send one already configured and ready to use out of the box.

According to reports, Apple dropped the feature before Apple Upgrade actually launched, so it never reached customers and isn’t part of the program as it exists today. Apple hasn’t said publicly why the idea was shelved, though the obvious candidates are the security and privacy complexity of handling a customer’s personal data before a device ever reaches them, something that goes well beyond what device setup and iCloud restore already handle on-device.

Apple Upgrade itself launched in the United States in July 2026, covering iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, and iPad on lease terms rather than a traditional purchase. iPhone leases run 12 or 24 months starting at $17.99 a month, while Mac and iPad stretch to 24 or 36 months, starting at $24.99 and $11.99 respectively. Apple Watch sits at $11.99 a month on the same 12- or 24-month terms as iPhone. Actual pricing shifts based on the device and whether a customer trades in an eligible product through Apple Trade In, and Klarna is the financing partner behind the leases rather than Apple itself.

The preconfigured-iPhone idea would have fit neatly into that pitch, since leasing programs work best when upgrading feels effortless, and a lot of that effort currently sits in migrating data every time a device changes hands. Dropping it suggests Apple wasn’t comfortable with how that convenience would need to work in practice, even if it never explained the reasoning.

For anyone using Apple Upgrade now, the practical result is that replacement devices arrive the same way any new iPhone does, requiring the usual setup and restore from backup. The leasing structure is still built to make swapping devices painless, just not to the point of Apple pre-loading a customer’s personal data before it ships.
