Hey everyone, welcome back! Today, we’re taking a closer look at one of Tecno’s newest offerings in the mid-range category the Tecno Camon 40 Pro 5G. At first glance, it might not scream “flagship,” but once you spend time with it, you’ll see why this phone punches above its weight.

Let’s break down the experience design, display, cameras, performance, and everything in between.

Refreshed Design That Stands Out

The Camon 40 Pro 5G gets a noticeable redesign this year. Gone is the oversized circular camera island from its predecessor. Instead, we now get a cleaner vertical layout for the rear cameras. Interestingly, although the phone displays three cutouts, only two are actually functional lenses. One of the small but cool touches is a notification light next to the top camera it glows when charging or recording.

Our unit came in Galaxy Black, but if you want a flashier look, Glacier White and Emerald Lake Green are also available. The back has a matte-like texture, and Tecno says the design draws inspiration from a swan’s neck. We’re not entirely sure about that, but it’s certainly sleek.

Despite the large screen, the phone feels light and thin just 7.29 mm thick and 179g in weight. The curved front and back help with grip, and durability is strong thanks to Corning Gorilla Glass 7i. Even better, you get IP68/IP69 water and dust resistance, meaning the phone can handle a little rain, splashes, and even short submersion.

New Shortcut Button and Practical Ports

Tecno has added a customizable action button on the left side, called the “One Tap Flash Snap.” It’s handy for launching the camera or starting a quick video. Long-pressing it activates Ella, Tecno’s built-in AI assistant. You can remap it to other functions too, which is a nice bonus.

The power button and volume rocker sit on the right, while the top edge houses an IR blaster, mic, and one of the stereo speakers. At the bottom, there’s a USB-C port, SIM tray, another mic, and the second speaker.

Display: A Major Highlight

One of the best features here is the 6.78-inch curved AMOLED display. It offers a sharp Full HD+ resolution and a silky-smooth 144Hz refresh rate. Colors are vibrant, brightness is solid, and you’ll enjoy every scroll or swipe. It’s especially great for gaming and binge-watching.

That said, the curve on the screen is a bit of a mixed bag. While it looks premium and adds immersion, it sometimes causes distortion near the edges, particularly when watching videos or playing in landscape mode.

Stereo Sound

You get dual stereo speakers, which are decent, but not groundbreaking. They’re clear enough for watching videos or calls, but lack a bit of depth and bass. If you’re an audiophile, you’ll probably want to pair it with Bluetooth earbuds  especially since the phone supports Dolby Atmos.

Security: Fast and Reliable

The in-display fingerprint sensor works well and quickly recognizes your prints. Face unlock is available too, and both methods perform reliably for daily use.

Cameras: Quality Over Quantity

Around the back is a 50MP main camera with OIS, and an 8MP ultra-wide. Tecno dropped the macro sensor this time a decision that might disappoint some, but it doesn’t really affect overall usability.

Daylight photos are crisp and well-exposed, with natural color reproduction. The ultra-wide sensor works well in good lighting, though it struggles in low light. The 50MP selfie camera on the front is a strong point rare at this price and includes autofocus, which many rivals skip.

Both front and rear cameras support 4K@30fps video, and there’s a fun dual-video mode that records from both simultaneously. Great for vloggers or casual content creators.

Performance and Gaming: Better Than Expected

Powering the phone is the MediaTek Dimensity 7300, with 8GB or 12GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage. RAM can be virtually expanded using MemFusion. On benchmarks, it scored around 690,000 on AnTuTu, which is pretty solid for its price range.

For high-end games like Zenless Zone Zero or Wuthering Waves, you’ll need to stick to medium or low settings to avoid frame drops. Lighter games and day-to-day performance are smooth overall.

Software and AI Features

The phone runs HiOS 15 based on Android 15, and it’s surprisingly clean. Not much bloatware, and the UI is smooth.

Ella AI brings features like:

It’s not just gimmicks  some of these tools are genuinely useful.

Battery and Charging

With a 5,200mAh battery, the Camon 40 Pro can easily last a full day, even with 5G and 144Hz enabled. Charging is fast thanks to 45W wired charging, taking around 45–50 minutes to reach 100%. That’s pretty solid for a phone in this bracket.

In PCMark battery tests, it clocked over 14 hours  not the best, but good enough for daily use.

Final Thoughts

The Tecno Camon 40 Pro 5G doesn’t try to be the ultimate flagship. Instead, it gives you a great blend of design, performance, and smart features all at a reasonable price.

At around $220 for the 8GB RAM model and approximately $255 for the 12GB RAM version, it’s hard to ignore. If you’re on a budget and want something that looks great, performs reliably, and doesn’t skimp on modern features, this might just be the perfect match.
