Google’s rumored rear lighting feature just got a real name change, and a lot more detail to go with it. Reports indicate that a teardown of the latest Google Contacts app update uncovered code referencing a feature called HiLight, previously known by the unofficial name “Pixel Glow.” The code reportedly lists nine selectable colors: Blue, Cyan, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Teal, White, and Yellow. This is being treated as one of the more credible Pixel 11 leaks so far, since it comes from actual app code rather than a random tip, though Google hasn’t confirmed the name or full feature set.
The mechanics are fairly simple. Reports say users will be able to assign a specific HiLight color to individual contacts, and when that person calls, an RGB LED strip built into the rear camera bar lights up, useful specifically when the phone is lying face down and the screen isn’t visible. It’s a modern spin on the notification LEDs that used to be standard on Android phones a decade ago, before manufacturers phased them out.
Earlier leaks have also connected HiLight to Gemini, suggesting the light could pulse or change during AI interactions, though exact animation patterns haven’t surfaced yet. Google’s own teaser imagery for the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro Fold has shown a colored glow around the camera bar, lining up with what’s being reported.
Compare that to the Pixel 10 Pro, which shipped with just a plain white LED flash, and HiLight looks like a genuine hardware addition rather than a software reskin.
Google’s Made by Google event lands August 12, with preorders opening the same day. If HiLight is real, we’ll know exactly how it works within days.
