Apple Raises Trade-In Values Ahead of iPhone 18 Launch

Apple just made trading in an old device meaningfully more lucrative, and the timing lines up with two things happening at once: a new iPhone launch approaching and the same memory shortage that’s been driving prices up all year. The company raised its U.S. trade-in estimates today across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch, with some devices gaining nearly 30% compared to the last update in May and added several Android phones for the first time.

iPhone Trade-In Values

ModelOld ValueNew Value
iPhone 16 Pro Max$695$720
iPhone 16 Pro$560$630
iPhone 16 Plus$465$485
iPhone 16$460$480
iPhone 15 Pro Max$490$530
iPhone 15 Pro$410$420
iPhone 14 Pro Max$375$405
iPhone 13 Pro Max$320$340
iPhone 12 Pro Max$220$240
iPhone 11 Pro Max$150$160

The iPhone 16e, iPhone 14 Plus, second-generation iPhone SE, iPhone X, and iPhone 8 Plus were all left unchanged this round.

Macs Saw the Largest Jumps

The MacBook Pro’s top estimate jumped $165 to $855, while the Mac Studio climbed from $1,045 to $1,305, a nearly 25% increase on its own. That’s not a coincidence. Apple raised prices across almost its entire Mac and iPad lineup back in late June, directly citing the same AI-driven DRAM and NAND shortage that’s been squeezing the entire industry. Bumping trade-in values now suggests Apple sees real resale and refurbishment value in those higher-memory components too; the same chips driving up new-device prices are apparently making used ones worth more to Apple as well.

Android Trade-Ins Expanded for the First Time

Pixel 9 ProUp to $400
Pixel 9Up to $260
OnePlus 13Up to $270

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 tops the Android list, ahead of even most iPhones outside the 16 Pro Max Apple’s clearest acknowledgment yet that it wants Android switchers walking in with real trade-in leverage, not just Apple upgraders.

Why the Timing Matters

Apple’s iPhone 18 event is widely expected in mid-September, and this is the same seasonal pattern Apple ran in May before that update too trade-in values reliably climb in the weeks before a launch, then typically soften once new inventory needs stop pulling as hard on used devices. If you’re sitting on an iPhone 14 Pro or older specifically, the gap between today’s value and what you’d get after September’s keynote is the real number worth watching, not just the headline increase.
