Walmart is finally adding Apple Pay, more than a decade after Apple Pay first launched in 2014. The retailer confirmed on August 21, 2026 that Tap to Pay is coming to Walmart and Sam’s Club locations starting August 24, with plans to reach every US store by the end of the year.
This is a bigger deal than it sounds, because Walmart wasn’t just skipping Apple Pay specifically. It didn’t accept Google Pay, Samsung Pay, or even contactless physical cards either, leaning entirely on its own QR-code-based Walmart Pay system since 2016. As recently as January 2026, none of the major NFC wallets worked at a US Walmart. Now customers can just tap an iPhone, Apple Watch, or contactless card at the terminal instead of opening the Walmart app and scanning a code.

The rollout is gradual, not instant. Reports describe an internal schedule starting with Arkansas in late August, expanding through most states by early October, and wrapping up nationally by year’s end. Gas stations are a separate timeline entirely, not getting Tap to Pay until mid-2027.
Walmart Pay isn’t going anywhere, this is additive, not a replacement, and Scan & Go stays intact at Sam’s Club too. Walmart’s also letting customers load its own Walmart, Sam’s Club, and OnePay cards into digital wallets, which is a real shift for a company that’s spent years pushing its own payment ecosystem instead of joining the standard NFC world everyone else already uses.
If you’ve been avoiding Walmart specifically because checkout meant fumbling with an app, that friction is finally going away, just not everywhere at once.
