Samsung to Exclusively Supply OLED Panels for Apple’s Next MacBook Ultra

Apple’s move to OLED MacBooks has been rumored on and off since 2023, but the supply chain signal just got a lot more concrete. According to Korean industry outlet The Elec, Samsung Display will be the exclusive supplier of OLED touch panels for Apple’s redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, with production reportedly starting around August at Samsung’s Asan facility in South Korea.

This one’s worth taking seriously rather than treating as another recycled leak. The reports have broken accurate Samsung supply-chain details before, and the timing lines up with reports that Apple skipped LG Display and BOE entirely for this generation, reportedly because neither could clear Apple’s yield requirements on the tandem OLED structure being used. Initial panel supply is pegged at around 250,000 units, which is a modest opening run for a first-generation product, similar to how Apple ramps other new component categories slowly before scaling.

The bigger surprise buried in the latest reporting is the display technology itself. These aren’t standard OLED panels; they’re described as two-stack tandem OLED with on-cell touch integration, meaning Apple’s MacBook Pro would gain a genuine multi-touch display for the first time in the line’s history, something the standard MacBook Pro has never offered since its 2006 debut. That combination of OLED and touch is also reportedly why Samsung ended up as the sole qualified supplier rather than splitting orders the way Apple typically does with iPhone displays.

Timing has slipped, too. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had previously pointed to a late 2026 launch, but his more recent reporting suggests early 2027 is now more likely, with the global chip shortage cited as the reason for the delay a supply constraint that’s already reshaped launch timing across several of Apple’s other 2026 hardware plans.

There’s also fresh naming confusion worth flagging. Most of the earlier reporting referred to these as OLED MacBook Pro models, but the newest reports have revived chatter around “MacBook Ultra” branding, something Apple hasn’t confirmed in any form and that contradicts a chunk of the earlier, more established rumor trail. Until Apple says otherwise, treat the Pro naming as the safer bet.

None of this is official, and Apple hasn’t confirmed a display supplier, a launch window, or even what the product will be called. But a sole-source deal this specific, with a facility, a panel count, and a production month attached, is usually a sign the hardware is much closer to real than the vague “Apple is exploring OLED” rumors that have circulated for the past two years.
