Apple’s ‘MacBook Ultra’ to Launch with M5 Pro and M5 Max Chips

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the rumored MacBook Ultra will launch with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than the M6 Pro and M6 Max previously anticipated. Apple has apparently skipped that generation entirely for high-end Macs, planning to jump directly from M6 base chips to M7 Pro and M7 Max for a second-generation MacBook Ultra expected in late 2027.

The first-generation model is expected between late 2026 and early 2027 in 14-inch and 16-inch configurations sitting above the existing MacBook Pro lineup rather than replacing it.

The hardware changes are where the real story is. The MacBook Ultra is rumored to feature Apple’s first OLED display on a MacBook, supporting touch input for the first time making it the first touchscreen Mac in Apple’s history. The chassis gets thinner, bezels shrink, and the notch disappears in favor of an iPhone-style Dynamic Island adapted for macOS displaying live activities, background tasks, and Siri interactions.

A reinforced hinge handles the structural demands of touch interaction, and the Dynamic Island unifies the visual language across iPhone, iPad, and Mac in a way Apple has clearly been building toward.

Pricing hasn’t leaked officially, but analysts expect it to start above $3,000 given its positioning above the M5 Pro MacBook Pro’s $1,999 entry point.

Everything here is unconfirmed. Mark Gurman’s reports carry weight, but Apple hasn’t acknowledged the MacBook Ultra exists.
