North Carolina just became the clearest next state getting Apple Wallet driver’s licenses, and unlike a few other states in the pipeline, this one actually has dates attached. The state’s DMV plans to launch its mobile ID program in December 2026 through a dedicated NC Wallet app, with Apple Wallet integration expected to follow in early 2027, alongside Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet support arriving around the same time.
Three other states are also apparently in the works: Oklahoma, Utah, and Virginia. Reports say evidence for all three turned up in Apple’s backend code, meaning Apple’s actively building support, but none of them have an actual launch date yet. Oklahoma’s furthest along on the legal side, a bill passed back in March 2026 gave the state authorization to issue digital IDs with Apple involved directly in that process, while Utah already runs its own mobile driver’s license app without Apple Wallet support layered on yet.
Right now Apple Wallet driver’s licenses work in 14 states plus Puerto Rico, everything from Arizona and Maryland, the first two states to launch back in 2022, up through more recent additions like Arkansas, which joined in May 2026. Once North Carolina goes live, that list grows again.
Worth remembering if you’re in one of these states already: a Wallet ID isn’t a full replacement for your physical license. It works for TSA checkpoints at over 250 US airports and select businesses and apps, but law enforcement doesn’t universally accept it, so you’ll still want to carry the physical card. North Carolina residents have a real timeline to look forward to now, everyone else still watching Oklahoma, Utah, or Virginia is waiting on Apple to actually commit to a date.
