Samsung’s foldable strategy is changing and a leaked Weibo video showing physical dummy units of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide makes that unmistakably clear. The device looks nothing like the tall, narrow Fold phones Samsung has shipped for the past five years. It’s shorter, significantly wider, and built more like a passport than a phone. That’s the whole point.
The dummy unit comparison in the leak shows the Fold 8 Wide sitting noticeably broader in the hand than previous Fold devices. Rumored dimensions tell the full story 161.4 × 123.9 × 4.3mm unfolded and 161.4 × 82.2 × 9.8mm folded. That’s an unusually wide cover screen for a foldable, with an inner 7.6-inch main display at roughly a 4:3 aspect ratio closer to an iPad than anything Samsung has shipped before. The cover display is reportedly 5.4 inches. One UI 9 firmware already contains internal design references and camera layout graphics for the device, confirming Samsung has been working on this for a while.
There’s genuine naming confusion worth flagging. Earlier reports called this device the “Fold 8 Wide” newer leaks from Ice Universe suggest Samsung may simply brand it the Galaxy Z Fold 8, with the current expected Fold 8 potentially becoming the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Nothing official yet, but the branding could change before July.
Cameras are where the trade-offs appear. Leaks suggest 50MP main and 50MP ultrawide but no periscope telephoto lens, reportedly sacrificed for thickness. At 4.3mm unfolded, it’s impressively slim, but zoom photography takes the hit. S Pen support may also be removed or limited. Both cuts make sense mechanically fitting a wider body at this thinness requires compromises.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 handles performance, with a rumoured 4,800–5,000mAh battery and 45W charging. Samsung Unpacked is expected around July 22, 2026, alongside the Z Flip 8 and Galaxy Watch 9 series.
Samsung is clearly responding to Oppo’s Find N series, Honor’s Magic V lineup, and Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone all of which use wider designs that feel more natural in the hand.
Nothing is confirmed officially yet. But the hardware already exists in physical form. July will answer every remaining question.
