Free social media just got a little more complicated. Meta officially launched paid subscription tiers across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp today, the company’s biggest push into consumer subscriptions across its core apps. The core apps remain free. But if you want extra features, you’ll now need to pay for them.
The pricing is straightforward. Facebook Plus and Instagram Plus both cost $3.99 per month. WhatsApp Plus is $2.99 per month. Meta also launched AI subscription tiers Meta One Plus at $7.99 for higher AI usage limits and image generation, and Meta One Premium at $19.99 for advanced video generation, expanded Thinking Mode, and premium AI tools.
What do you actually get? Facebook Plus adds extended Stories duration, extra customization tools, and early access to experimental features. Instagram Plus brings Story Extend, Story Rewatch, anonymous story viewing, and enhanced creator editing tools. WhatsApp Plus is the most practical of the three extra pinned chats, custom themes, premium stickers, custom ringtones, and additional list organization tools that power users will genuinely appreciate.
The AI tiers are currently limited to test regions including Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia; broader rollout hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Why is Meta doing this? The answer is straightforward: the company is projected to spend up to $145 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026 and investors have been pushing hard for revenue streams beyond advertising. Subscriptions are the obvious answer, and Meta is far from the first platform to go this route. WhatsApp Plus has reportedly been in testing since April 2026, suggesting this launch has been planned for months.
Meta is clear that these are optional upgrades; nobody loses existing features by not subscribing.
Country-by-country pricing and full regional availability remain unconfirmed. Check your app settings the subscription options may already be waiting in your account.
