Oklahoma residents can now add their driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet after Virginia, and the timing is notable for a reason that has nothing to do with today’s date. Apple originally named Oklahoma as one of its launch partners for this feature back in September 2021, alongside states like Arizona, Georgia, and Utah. It’s taken nearly five years for that promise to actually materialize.
With today’s rollout, Oklahoma becomes the 16th state to support driver’s licenses or state IDs in Apple Wallet, joining a list that now includes California, Illinois, Ohio, and Virginia, which only launched about a week earlier. Two states added in roughly seven days is a faster clip than Apple’s digital ID program has typically moved, suggesting the rollout may finally be picking up pace after years of state-by-state negotiations.
Setup happens directly in the Wallet app: tap the plus button, select Driver’s License and ID Cards, then Oklahoma, and complete Apple’s verification process, which involves scanning both sides of the physical license and confirming identity. Once approved, the ID lives on both iPhone and Apple Watch, protected by Face ID or Touch ID rather than a simple screen unlock.
The bigger caveat is acceptance. A Wallet ID currently works at select TSA checkpoints across more than 250 U.S. airports and a limited set of businesses and apps, not everywhere a physical license would work. Oklahoma drivers still need to carry the physical card, since there’s no indication this digital version is accepted universally, including during routine traffic stops.
Kentucky, Utah, Connecticut, Mississippi, and North Carolina are reportedly next in line, though timelines vary, with North Carolina specifically targeting early 2027 for Wallet support after launching its own standalone app first.
