Apple just moved the iPhone X onto its obsolete products list, and if you’re still holding onto one, here’s what that actually changes. As of August 13, 2026, Apple has officially discontinued hardware service for the phone, meaning authorized repair shops can no longer order official parts for it. The 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro got the same treatment in this update.
Before you panic, obsolete doesn’t mean dead. Your phone isn’t going to shut off, Apple isn’t remotely bricking anything, and your data’s fine. It just means Apple’s walked away from official repairs, full stop. Independent shops might still patch one up if they can source parts on their own, but that’s a different thing entirely from Apple standing behind it.
Worth knowing the difference here too: vintage is the stage before this, five to seven years since Apple stopped selling something, where limited repairs are still sometimes possible. Obsolete is the next step down, and it’s basically the end of the road officially. The iPhone X’s software story wrapped up a while ago anyway, iOS 16 was its last major update, with 16.7.16 being the final version floating around.
Kind of wild thinking back to when this thing launched, September 2017, starting at $999 for 64GB, and it basically rewrote what an iPhone looks like. No home button, Face ID, edge-to-edge OLED, that whole design language stuck around for years afterward.
If you’re still running an X daily, it’ll keep working just fine. Just don’t expect Apple to be the one fixing it anymore, and start thinking about what’s next before something actually breaks.
