The Nova 16 SE launched today in China as the first SE-branded Nova phone since the Nova 12 SE debuted back in 2024, and it’s already the fifth model added to the Nova 16 family this year alone, following the Nova 16z, standard Nova 16, Nova 16 Pro, and Nova 16 Ultra.
Display and Battery
The display and battery are doing the heavy lifting here. The 6.84-inch flat OLED panel runs at 120Hz with a claimed 8,000 nits of peak brightness, a genuinely unusual spec for a phone under $400 most rivals in this bracket top out closer to 1,500-2,000 nits. Backing that up is an 8,500mAh battery with 66W wired charging, a notably larger cell than what OnePlus just shipped in its own budget-focused N6x, which launched at a similar price with a 7,000mAh battery capped at just 15W charging.
Performance and Cameras
Huawei’s in-house Kirin 8020 chip powers the phone, paired with up to 512GB of storage and a dual rear camera setup built around a 50MP RYYB main sensor with OIS, alongside a 1.5MP “Red Maple” multispectral sensor Huawei says is dedicated purely to refining skin tone and white balance rather than adding zoom or wide-angle coverage.
Durability
Durability is where Huawei clearly wanted bragging rights, stacking IP65, IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K certifications onto a single device a combination that covers everything from dust resistance to high-pressure hot water jets, well beyond what most mid-rangers bother certifying for.
A Rebadge in Disguise?
There’s a wrinkle worth knowing about before assuming this is an entirely new design, though: several supply-chain reports ahead of launch described the Nova 16 SE as a rebadged version of Huawei’s existing Enjoy 90X Premium Edition, repositioned under the more recognizable Nova name specifically to justify pricing near 2,000 yuan despite industry-wide memory cost increases. If accurate, that’s less “new phone” and more “familiar hardware, better branding” though for buyers, the spec sheet itself doesn’t change either way.
Price and Availability
Pricing starts at 2,499 yuan (about $370) for 128GB, rising to 2,699 yuan (~$400) for 256GB and 3,199 yuan (~$475) for the top 512GB configuration. All three ships in Cherry Blossom Snow Sky, Dawn Orange, Starry Night Black, or Sky White, with deliveries beginning the week of August 10 through Huawei’s own online store no international launch has been mentioned yet.
Should You Buy It?
For anyone shopping in China’s sub-$400 segment specifically for screen brightness and battery size, the Nova 16 SE undercuts most rivals on both fronts. Just don’t expect flagship camera versatility to come along with it; this is a phone built around endurance and visibility, not photography range.
