Samsung is reportedly replacing Windows with One UI on laptops

Windows has had a near-monopoly on Samsung’s laptop lineup for years. That might be about to change in a significant way. Reports indicate Samsung is actively developing Galaxy Book laptops running Android 17 with One UI 9, the same software ecosystem already powering its phones, tablets, watches, and TVs. If accurate, this is one of the most consequential shifts in Samsung’s hardware strategy in over a decade.

The concept is straightforward but ambitious. One UI 9, based on Android 17, would bring a unified software experience across every Samsung screen, something Apple has been doing with iOS and macOS integration for years. Samsung’s answer isn’t to build a Mac competitor. It’s to make Android genuinely work as a laptop operating system, potentially through a hybrid approach combining Android 17 with a ChromeOS-based variant internally codenamed “Aluminium.”

Three models are reportedly in development: entry-level, mid-range, and a flagship Galaxy Book with a premium thin-and-light design. All three are expected to include Galaxy AI features already familiar from the S26 series AI writing tools, real-time translation, and smart productivity assistance. An improved version of Samsung DeX is also expected, pushing the desktop-mode experience significantly beyond what the phone-based version currently offers.

The ecosystem angle is where Samsung’s pitch gets genuinely compelling. Deep integration between Galaxy phones, tablets, wearables, and now laptops means seamless file sharing and cross-device continuity, the kind of workflow Apple users take for granted but Android users have never quite had.

No official launch date exists yet. Post-Google I/O 2026 is the window most reports are pointing toward, with a possible late 2026 debut.

If Samsung pulls this off cleanly, the Chromebook category will never look the same again.
