Apple has been on a thinness drive for the last couple of iPhone generations, which is exactly what makes this rumor interesting. Leaks are suggesting the iPhone 18 Pro could actually get thicker compared to the iPhone 17 Pro and the reasons behind it make more sense than the number itself might imply.
Reports point to a possible thickness of anywhere between 9.9mm and 10.9mm, up from the iPhone 17 Pro’s 8.75mm. That’s a meaningful jump if it holds, and the two rumored reasons for it are a larger battery and a variable-aperture main camera system. A variable aperture physically adjusts how much light enters the lens depending on the scene, something Android flagships like Huawei and Samsung have experimented with, but Apple has never shipped. Fitting that mechanism inside a smartphone requires space, and a thicker chassis provides it.
The camera system overall is rumored to go triple 48MP across all three rear lenses, with further computational photography improvements on top. Display changes reportedly include a smaller Dynamic Island and some Face ID components moving under the screen, freeing up more usable screen real estate without changing the overall display size.
Performance follows the expected path Apple’s A20 chip inside, with better AI capabilities and improved power efficiency. No battery capacity figure has leaked with any confidence, but the thickness increase itself is the strongest signal yet that Apple is prioritizing runtime in a serious way this cycle.
One important caveat: some credible reports still suggest the iPhone 18 Pro could stay at 8.75mm, meaning the thickness question isn’t settled.
