Huawei isn’t done with the tri-fold format, it’s just getting started. The Huawei Mate XT 2 is reportedly in development, and if the leaks are accurate, the second-generation tri-fold is shaping up to be a meaningful upgrade over the original Mate XT rather than a minor refresh.
The most talked-about change is the folding mechanism itself. The current Mate XT uses a G-shaped tri-fold design, but reports point to Huawei switching to a U-shaped folding architecture for the Mate XT 2. The practical benefits are real better display protection, reduced hinge stress, improved durability over time, and a more compact folded profile. The hinge on any foldable is where long-term reliability lives or dies, and Huawei appears to be addressing that directly.
On the inside, a next-generation Kirin chipset is expected either a Kirin 9050 Pro or a new LogicFolding Architecture-based processor, depending on the source. The battery is rumored to grow beyond the 5,600mAh in the original, with leaks pointing to 6,000mAh or larger. Camera hardware gets attention too, with a 50MP main sensor featuring variable aperture leading a revised setup that reportedly approaches the image quality of Huawei’s Mate X8 flagship foldable. Stylus support is also rumored, which would open up a genuine productivity angle for a device that unfolds into roughly a 10.2-inch display.
Launch timing points to September or October 2026, with some reports linking the reveal to Huawei’s Mate 90 series announcement.
