OpenAI’s first hardware product isn’t the AI phone or wearable everyone expected according to Bloomberg, it’s shaping up to be a portable, screen-free smart speaker built around ChatGPT, designed to feel less like an Echo or HomePod and more like a personal AI companion that actually understands the room it’s sitting in.
The biggest departure from existing smart speakers is the inclusion of a camera and environmental sensors, letting the device recognize nearby objects and pick up context that voice alone can’t capture. There’s no screen involved; interaction happens entirely through conversation, powered by a more advanced version of ChatGPT’s voice technology, reportedly including GPT-Live capabilities. It’s also portable rather than stationary, running on a rechargeable battery so you can carry it between rooms instead of leaving it plugged into one corner of your kitchen.
Perhaps the strangest detail is that the device may include small moving mechanical parts, apparently meant to give it a sense of personality rather than feeling like a static gadget. OpenAI is also positioning this as a companion that learns your habits and preferences over time, rather than just responding to commands on demand.
The design pedigree here is hard to ignore. This is a collaboration with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom, following OpenAI’s roughly $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive’s hardware startup, io Products. Reports peg pricing around $200 to $300, putting it squarely against Amazon Echo and Google Nest devices, with a reveal possibly in 2026 and an actual release closer to 2027.
Naturally, a camera-equipped AI assistant with persistent memory raises real privacy questions OpenAI hasn’t addressed yet when it’s listening, when it’s watching, and what it remembers.
