Apple is working on two new Apple Pencil models, and the most interesting part isn’t the hardware upgrade, it’s what’s changing on the inside. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a refreshed Apple Pencil USB-C and a new Apple Pencil Pro, both targeting a spring 2027 launch alongside next-generation iPad Pro models.
The internal codenames are B582 for the updated USB-C model successor to the entry-level Apple Pencil introduced in 2023 and B632 for the new Apple Pencil Pro, following the model Apple launched in 2024. Both are expected to receive internal updates, with the USB-C model retaining its current charging method.
The headline change is the battery system. Gurman reports Apple is exploring designs that would make the batteries in both Pencil models more easily replaceable. This is a direct response to upcoming European Union regulations requiring easier battery replacement in consumer electronics and it represents a meaningful shift for a product that has historically been heavily glued together and difficult to repair. Anyone who has tried to service an Apple Pencil knows how locked down the current design is, so this would be a genuine improvement for repairability.
Gurman is one of the most reliable Apple leakers in the industry, which gives this rumor more weight than most. That said, Apple hasn’t confirmed the codenames, the replaceable battery design, or the spring 2027 window.
