Samsung’s One UI 9 rollout is moving faster than most people expected. What started as a Galaxy S26-exclusive beta has now expanded to internal testing across the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S24, and the upcoming Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8, a clear signal that Samsung is accelerating its Android 17 timeline well beyond the flagship lineup it initially launched with.
The foldable angle is where things get genuinely interesting. Firmware code discovered inside One UI 9 references a new “wide fold” profile, including an isWideFoldModel variable specifically designed for landscape-style foldables. That’s not generic code; it strongly suggests Samsung is building dedicated interface layouts for wider foldable form factors, separate from how software currently handles the standard Fold’s tall-and-narrow shape. Combined with the persistent Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide leaks circulating for weeks, the software groundwork and hardware rumors are now lining up cleanly.
The beta program itself has been progressing steadily since May 2026, with Beta 3 landing in South Korea, India, UK, and Poland, focused primarily on bug fixes and stability rather than new features, typically a sign that software is approaching maturity ahead of a wider rollout. Expected improvements across the final release include better Galaxy AI capabilities, smoother animations, improved battery optimization, enhanced multitasking, expanded lock screen customization, and possibly native app locking using tools built into Android 17 itself. Cross-device continuity and browser improvements round out the feature list currently circulating from internal builds.
The timeline tells its own story. March 2026 saw the first internal builds appear. May brought the public S26 beta. June expanded testing to S25, S24, and the foldable lineup. July is when Samsung is widely expected to unveil the Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 almost certainly with One UI 9 debuting alongside them as the headline software experience.
