Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone Fold alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September. It will run iOS 27, which Apple is due to preview in June at WWDC. However, iPhone Fold-specific software features are not expected to be revealed before the hardware itself.
The inner foldable display will be roughly the size of an iPad mini, while the external screen will be about the size of a small iPhone’s display. The inner display is expected to have a 4:3 aspect ratio and will feature new display technology designed to significantly reduce the crease while also improving durability.
Software & Multitasking
The inner display will support iPad-like layouts and side-by-side apps. Apple is developing new iOS app layouts and navigation elements such as iPad-style sidebars along the left edge of the screen. Developers will also be able to adapt their iPhone apps for the new interface, which will use proportions similar to an iPad in landscape mode.
However, there are clear limits. The device will not support windowed multitasking like the iPad, nor will it run iPad apps. Despite the larger display and tablet-style interface, it will still run iOS with simpler multitasking elements rather than the full desktop-like interface seen in iPadOS 26.
Design & Hardware
The design includes a camera plateau similar to the iPhone Air, except with two cameras instead of one. The phone is rounded on two corners and squared off on the other two where the hinge is located. It will also feature a hole-punch camera on both the cover display and inner display, a dual rear camera setup, and a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button.
A recent rumor suggests Apple may brand its first foldable as the iPhone Ultra rather than iPhone Fold.
