Samsung Names Mobile Chief TM Roh as Co-CEO in Major Leadership Shift

Samsung Names Mobile Chief TM Roh as Co-CEO

Samsung Electronics has officially promoted TM Roh, the head of its Mobile eXperience (MX) division, to co-CEO, marking a major reshuffle at the world’s largest smartphone maker. The move restores Samsung’s traditional dual-CEO structure, pairing Roh with existing co-CEO Jun Young-hyun, who continues overseeing the company’s crucial semiconductor and memory business.

Roh will now lead the Device eXperience (DX) Division, which includes smartphones, tablets, wearables, TVs, and home appliances, while still managing the mobile unit that produces the Galaxy S and Galaxy Fold series. He had been serving as acting head of DX since April, following the sudden passing of former co-CEO Han Jong-Hee.

Analysts call the appointment a “stable and predictable” choice, giving Samsung continuity in its consumer hardware strategy. Roh has led the mobile division since 2020, overseeing Samsung’s push into foldables and strengthening its position against Apple and Chinese competitors.

Samsung also announced additional leadership updates:

  • Janghyun Yoon becomes President & CTO of the DX Division and Head of Samsung Research.
  • Hongkun Park, a leading nanoscience and quantum researcher, will head the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT).

Following the announcement, Samsung’s stock dipped slightly, though analysts attribute the drop more to global market weakness than the leadership change.

Roh’s promotion signals Samsung’s plan to double down on its core strengths in mobile and semiconductor businesses as the company navigates rising competition, rapid AI growth, and the upcoming generation of Galaxy devices.
