Russia has officially blocked Apple’s FaceTime and Snap Inc.’s Snapchat, marking the latest escalation in the country’s tightening control over digital communication platforms. The move was confirmed by Roskomnadzor, Russia’s telecom regulator, which claims the apps were being used for terrorism-related activities, recruitment, fraud, and other crimes.
The ban on FaceTime affects all voice and video calling across Apple devices within Russia, while Snapchat is now completely inaccessible. Reports indicate that Snapchat restrictions began earlier this year, with the full nationwide block formalized this week.
This development comes as part of Russia’s wider crackdown on foreign tech services. Alongside FaceTime and Snapchat, the government has recently restricted several major platforms, citing security concerns and alleged misuse. Critics argue that the blocks reflect a deeper push to centralize control over online communication and limit access to foreign services.
Authorities have not indicated any timeline for restoring access, and more apps may face similar restrictions as Russia continues to tighten regulatory pressure on Western tech companies.
