OpenAI is reportedly preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with its first dedicated device, which is expected to be an AI-powered audio wearable similar to advanced earbuds or behind-the-ear hearables. The product is being developed in collaboration with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and his design firm, signaling a strong focus on premium design and usability.
Early reports suggest the device will function as an AI companion capable of voice-based interactions, contextual awareness, and hands-free control of everyday tasks, effectively extending ChatGPT-style capabilities into a wearable form factor. The wearable is rumored to feature advanced sensors for environmental awareness and could include a custom AI-focused chipset optimized for on-device processing and real-time voice interactions.
Manufacturing is expected to be handled by Foxconn, with production potentially taking place outside China, and the device could arrive in late 2026, although an earlier reveal is also possible depending on development timelines.
The AI earbuds are said to be part of a broader OpenAI hardware strategy that may later include additional AI-centric devices such as smart pens or home-style AI assistants, positioning the company to expand beyond software into a new ecosystem of intelligent consumer hardware.
