Apple’s iPhone 17 has taken the top spot in Marques Brownlee’s (MKBHD) highly anticipated 2025 Smartphone Awards, earning the title of “Phone of the Year (MVP)” and also securing the “Most Improved” award. This marks one of Apple’s strongest performances in recent years, with multiple wins across different categories.
According to Brownlee, the iPhone 17 finally delivers a truly complete package. The addition of a 120Hz ProMotion display to the standard lineup was highlighted as a major turning point, paired with improved performance, upgraded camera processing, larger base storage, and better overall value. MKBHD noted that the device “feels like the most complete and actually a great deal this year,” making it an easy pick for the top honor.
Apple dominated the awards with four total wins, more than any other brand. The iPhone Air took home the Best Design award, showcasing Apple’s shift toward lighter, slimmer hardware. However, not everything went Apple’s way the iPhone 16e was named “Bust of the Year”, criticized for its aggressive cost-cutting and underwhelming feature set.
While the iPhone 17 was the headline winner, Android flagships also made strong showings. The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max won Best Big Phone, and several Oppo and Samsung models claimed key category victories, reflecting a competitive year with no single brand sweeping the field.
