Huawei and Oppo are reportedly exploring a new square-shaped selfie camera sensor for their upcoming smartphones, according to fresh leaks from reliable tipsters. The move would mark a shift away from the traditional rectangular front camera sensors used in most phones today.
The idea behind a 1:1 square sensor is to allow more flexible framing for selfies and video calls. Such a sensor can capture a wider usable image area, making it easier to switch between portrait and landscape orientation without cropping or rotating the phone. This approach also enables better subject tracking and auto-framing, especially useful for group selfies and video conferencing.
Leaks suggest that Oppo could be the first Android brand to adopt this technology, possibly debuting it in a future Find X series flagship, such as the upcoming Find X10 lineup. Huawei is also said to be testing the square selfie sensor, with rumors pointing toward its camera-focused Nova series as a potential launch platform.
